CMC Carnival Character Analysis

So as many of my readers may have realized, I tend to use the labor of my friends for my writing from time to time. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s “slavery”, but I’ve been known to have my friends go run and get some video for me when I’m a bit too preoccupied. Don’t worry though; I make it up to them through video work for their own classes (a certain psychology project for Michael Bernacchi?) and just plain friendliness. For this instance though I needed footage of the annual CMC Student Carnival, which I was unable to make.

Due to a last minute trip to Grand Junction this past Wednesday in an attempt to serve my government (aka the okay paying, easy hours job known as Census Work) I had to skip out on the Carnival. Unfortunately this was my second year in a row to miss the event, because last year I was on River Orientation during the festivities. Worry not though, with the help of Mike, I’ve grasped a fair understanding of the day and have quite a bit of video to go along with it.
Instead of acting like I was there though (because obviously I wasn’t) I’ve decided to spin things around a bit for this post. This will be a bit more of a commentary of the video than anything else. I’ll describe some of my fellow classmates featured in the video and give you guys some insight into the people of CMC. In a way I’ve created my own reality show and here’s a look at the characters. As we have approached the end to another year (and my current career at CMC) I think it’s only fitting to do a piece on the interestingly fun people I’ve been around these past twelve months.

So from the get go you’ll notice a crazed young women running up to the camera screaming. Well ladies and gentlemen I introduce you to Caitlin Burdick. Caitlin is a second semester photo student here at CMC and is usually willing to include herself in any of the unique and entertaining activities the school has to offer. Much like a female version of myself she has no problem being energetic and fun at school events.

Followed soon after Caitlin, with an equally crazy “CARNIVAL!” call, is that of Rickey Martinez. Although I don’t know a whole lot on this guy (he moved into the dorms when I moved out) I do know that he has created his own Facebook Fan Page with a total of 60 fans. So yeah, an interesting, yet oh so humble, fellow.

The next clip, which pops up a few times throughout the video, is a hamster ball race between Hannah Hall and Natalie Maes. The current photo student and hopeful nursing student have been good friends of mine for a while and hang out with each other quite a bit. Both are extremely high-spirited girls and won’t take crap from anyone, including one another. So it is of no surprise to me that the two not only raced each other in very claustrophobic plastic balls (which were blown up by a leaf blower) but also proceeded to attack each other in them.

The main focuses of the bounce house clip are of the following: The young man tackling the dreadlocked female would be photo students Ryan Martinek and Taylor Sprague who have both been known to attack one another quite often. Whether it be bounce houses or large beanbags, this is nothing new to them. Next up, butt bouncing for the quick bit in the video, is fellow photo student Dan Hall. Dan, although quiet and shy from time to time, is very friendly when you get to know him and has a lot of fun around his friends. Finally with a very friendly gesture we see Savannah Johnson who has just recently graduated from the photo program. Now in case you haven’t noticed the trend, the photo students are very energetic and like to have a lot of fun, something I could maybe possibly relate to.

Don’t think that these are the only students who have fun though. Next up we see the ecstatic entrance of our videographer, Associate of Arts student Michael Bernacchi. Mike is a very good friend of mine and we have a lot in common. This being said I wasn’t surprised at all when I threw together this video and there was a lot of footage of Mike. Not that I would ever be the focus of one of my very unbiased videos, but perhaps if you put my head on mike’s in any of his appearances in the video (sped up cotton candy eating, bull riding, zombie face painting…) I would probably fit the situation. We both kinda like attention.

So throughout the rest of the video you’ll notice a lot of mike, another appearance by the hamster wheeled Hannah and Natalie, Caitlin feeding Mike, and a growly (which is actually the adjective of an animal’s hostile noise according to the dictionary) closing by a tiger faced, tricycle riding Ned Montgomery. Now I do not know much about Ned at all, beside the fact that he entered the dorms when I left and that he’s very friendly, but from what I hear he’s a good kid with a lot of potential in the, you guessed it, photography program.

In a final super secret ending following my closing graphics, you’ll see one of Sopris Residence Hall’s youngest inhabitants, Theo Corwin, riding the fake bull one handed. Theo, son of Assistant Coordinator of Student Life Laurie Corwin, is a very energetic (even for most kids his age) sweetheart who is held close to heart by nearly all CMC students who know him.

Now although this seems like a lot of rambling, nonsensical post, I think it’s important to bring some attention to the students of Colorado Mountain College. We have a lot of fun here and I’m totally going to miss it and the people here. Stay tuned for a slightly sentimental post on graduation and the end of times for my current CMC career within the next couple of days. Although my time here is coming to a close, that doesn’t mean you guys will be getting rid of me so soon, but more on that next time.

Until then though guys and gals,

Dylan Derryberry (Aspiring Journalist and Student Carnival Analyzer)
